DIY Dollar Store Spell Book

Every year for Halloween I set a small table out on our front porch with candy for Trick-or-Treaters since we are out trick-or-treating ourselves. My kids were so disappointed last year with the lack of Halloween decorations in the neighborhood, so I decided to step up the decorating a little this year!

This whole table set up will go outside on our front porch the night of Halloween and in the last few pictures you will see different candles...flameless ones from the Dollar Tree for safety!  I'll be blogging the rest of our outdoor Halloween decorations later this week.

I started with a black hardback book from the Dollar Tree and removed the paper cover. Open the book to a half way point and paint both sides with white paint. I used chalky finish paint in white. It helps cover the writing in the book but it also gave the pages a nice curl on the edges when the pages dried.

You can see the pages curling here! You could even paint more pages to make the book appear thicker with more curled pages.

I found two spell images online that I liked and printed them out.
Cut them to size and take a tea bag that has soaked in hot water and rub it all over your paper. I left a few darker "puddles" in spots on the paper to give more of an old feel.

While the paper was still wet I ripped the edges of the paper off & then let them dry. I didn't wait for them to completely dry but at least 10 min. While they were drying I burned the edges of the two pages with a lighter. Once the papers had dried some I used a mix of glue & water to attach the paper spells to the book pages! Unfortunately I didn't get pictures of these three steps.

The book pages around the tea died spells were still white, so I rubbed the tea bag in areas on the book as well.

The Dollar Tree has these flameless candle sticks that are just perfect!

I love the way it turned out....For $1! I'll make a cute little sign for the candy bowl Halloween night with a saying to take just one candy or you'll be cursed with "Never wanting candy again!"

Neutral Fall Table Setting

I fell in love with these neutral colored flowers at Michaels and decided to use them for a Fall center piece on our dining room table. I filled a wood planter box I built out of pallets a couple years ago with the flowers, cotton, and some foliage leaves. The soft colors are so inviting and cozy. I feel like these colors could almost be used year round!

The glass blue jars, small white pumpkins on the plate, and farmhouse cloth napkins are from Target One Spot.

I had to paint and spray paint a bag of small pumpkins & squash from Michaels since I wasn't able to find any in the soft colors I wanted. These are about 2" in size.

The bag was $9.99 but was on sale for 50% off at Michaels. I had to paint the blue since I didn't have spray paint in that color, but I had spay paint in a old white. I left the stems on the white ones when I spray painted them and just scrapped off some of the paint with my finger nail! I love the way they came out!

There were these little holes right nest to the stem of the pumpkins from the price tag, so I added a little sprig of  dried berries in the hole. I think it added a little touch of real nature to the fake pumpkin.

The little banner name tags are from Target One Spot...4 for a $1!

Hope this helps inspire you to play with your Fall décor this season.

Kid Friendly Halloween Party Decor

I held a little Halloween party at my house a couple of years ago and did a little party table in our dinning room. It was a black, white and orange theme. Fun for all ages and not too scary.

My supplies are from Target-One Spot, Michaels and Dollar Tree.
I made the black and white spiral streamers by taking shearing scissors to both edges taped them to the wall at the top and twisted them until I achieved the twist all the way to the bottom and taped it down at the bottom.

You can find the tutorial on how I made the large paper fans from Dollar Tree finds HERE. As seen in the picture bellow.

I covered organic apple sauce cups in black fabric and tied it off with orange and black bakers twin from Target, craft paper cut out into a circle, and little Halloween embellishments from Michaels.

The banner is from Target One Spot. I added the black and orange ribbon in between the triangles.

The brown paper bags are from Target One Spot. I added the embellishments to the front with stuff from Michaels Halloween station.

I covered Organic juice boxes in white paper and stamped them with a Halloween stamp.

Small chocolate bars wrapped in white paper and topped off with Halloween stickers from Michaels. I found a book of stickers for like $3!! They are nice cardboard stickers too:)

I created bottle wraps in Photoshop.

The little skeletons and brew pots are from Target One Spot. I put gum balls inside of them and added paper straws.

Colors and patterns was the theme of this party. Small and simple.

The kids were able to grab a juice box, apple sauce, Halloween wrapped candy, and the gum balls in the little plastic skeletons & witches pot.
