Kitchen Desk Area Makeover

Wow!! It's 2017! December was a crazy month for our family. We closed on our first home, had a baby girl join our family (#4), Christmas, and New Years! It's been three weeks since our little Ava was welcomed into the world and I've been trying to balance mommy hood and projects around the new home. First project checked off of the longggggg list was our desk area in the kitchen.

I still want to rip out the counter top and do the wood planks as the counter top but I'll wait to do that part. I painted the cabinet with a custom mix of Annie Sloan's chalk paint, Old White & Provence. Topped it off with a dark wax and sealed with General Finishes top coat. I wanted to spend as little money as possible so, I used what paints I had on hand.

This is what the before looked like. Sorry for the phone picture and I started painting when I remembered to take the "before" picture!

I looked at several different shelving options and wasn't finding the right thing. I wanted a chunky farmhouse style shelf that didn't cost a fortune!! It had to be deep as well to hold a 10" box. I found the perfect thing...a 2"x6"x12' Home Depot will cut wood for free so, if you have your measurements you won't have to pull out the saw. I planked two cuts together to create a deep shelf.

I sanded & stained the boards. I found the "L" shaped brackets in the hardware isle for $1.98 each! The decorative ones in the closet isle are $8 each and they don't even look good! I intended to have two large shelves above the corkboard but the second one didn't fit and my husband thought the wall would look too cluttered with one more large shelf, which he's right.

My shelves cost a total of $21! I still have one larger shelf too that didn't fit.

You can see in the above image the dark wax didn't go on as intended. It had a lot of large streaks. After washing out my paint brush it was still wet, I painted over it with the same color paint that I used for the cabinet.

I am more than happy with this transformation!!
The corkboard is from HomeGoods, the wire file folder holder is from Old Time Pottery, the shelving material is from Home Depot, and the hardware is from Lowes.

General Finishes High Performance Top Coat was perfect for this high traffic area!!
